The development of nuclear medicine instrumentation, and clinical developments in the United States and elsewhere during the 1960s, 70s was greatly facilitated by an important series of meetings at Oak Ridge, sponsored by the ORAU Medical Division, and attended by leaders in the field. These were followed by an important series of International meetings sponsored by the IAEA (Vienna) . Together, these meetings defined the emerging frontiers in nuclear medicine. Bidirectional exchanges between colleagues working in the first world, and emerging nations was important for ongoing work and stimulated international collaborations especially during the cold war years.
